District Announcements
Dr. Danny Merck Named New Superintendent
We're happy to introduce Dr. Danny Merck as the new Superintendent of the School District of Pickens County. Dr. Merck comes to the position with 23 years of experience in education, most of which were spent right here in the district. Dr. Merck has served in roles including teacher, coach, principal and district administrator. For the past two years, he has been the principal of Daniel High School.
He will officially step into his new leadership role on May 1. Until then, he will work with the board of trustees and our current Superintendent, Dr. Kelly Pew, to ensure a smooth transition.

Changes To School Calendar!
The 2013-2014 School Calendar was revised for the remainder of the school year on March 24. These calendars reflect changes because of snow days. We are using all three of the snow days that were built into the calendar at the start of the year, and the remaining snow days were forgiven by the board.

Key Changes:
  • School ends on June 6.
  • Exams (except for seniors) will be from June 3-6.
  • Schools will be open on April 21, May 23 and June 6.
  • Several grading period and report card dates have shifted.

The 2014-2015 school year will start on August 19 and end on June 3, and the class of 2015 will march on May 30!

Parents will notice something new on this calendar: 1:30 p.m. dismissal days. You may also hear these referred to as Early Release days. School will dismiss early on these days for teacher training. Early Release days will be on October 7, 2014 and February 3, 2015.

Arrival and Dismissal Procedures

For safety purposes, we want to remind everyone about arrival and dismissal procedures. All families must strictly follow these procedures to ensure the safety of the 740+ students that attend Forest Acres daily. Please study the following items closely and refer any questions to Mr. Craig or Mr. Byrd for clarification.

Volunteers Needed for 2013-2014

We support and encourage volunteers at Forest Acres. Volunteers make a difference to many people - students, families, teachers, and the entire community.

Each volunteer who will have direct contact with students must receive initial or renewal training from a district school and submit to a Sex Offenders’ Registry check.
Volunteers who have had the training in past years are required to renew their eligibility each year by updating their application and attending an annual volunteer training session.

In addition, any volunteer who will work with students without supervision by school staff  (for example, to volunteer as a field trip chaperone) must have a background check through the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) processed after July 1, 2011.
Please note: it is important for you to get your training early in the year while there are numerous sessions available to accommodate your schedule. You may attend a training session at any of the schools in our district. The volunteer must pay the $25 cost of the background check.

Please Note:
  • All SLED checks must be processed through the School District of Pickens County. We do not accept background checks run by another agency, school district or individual.
  • Background checks are effective for three school years.
  • For the 2013-2014 school year, background checks must have been processed after July 1, 2011.
  • The cost of the background check is $25 and must be paid by the volunteer.
  • Checks must be written to the school and included with the initial volunteer application or request to renew eligibility.
  • Volunteers who need background checks should arrange to have them completed early in the year. Background checks must be requested and paid for two weeks before the date of any field trip.

We have completed 6 Volunteer Trainings during the fall and will schedule trainings in the spring:

The 2013-2014 Volunteer Training Schedule for all schools will show trainings avaialble across the county if you are not able to attend one of the trainings at Forest Acres; the schedule is on the
Volunteer Information page. Thank you for volunteering in SDPC schools!
